The Buckhorn Canyon Road (AKA County Road 27) sustained a great deal of damage from the 2013 floods. The reconstruction consists of construction of three new bridges, repairs to one existing bridge, and reconstruction of 1.6 miles of roadway through the "Narrows". To accomplish the above work approximately 40,000 cubic yards of rock will be blasted and excavated, 30,000 cubic yards of riprap placed, 11,000 tons of base course and 10,000 tons of asphalt placed, and 2000 cubic yards of concrete poured.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES:

Bridge Structure 4.0

Abutment construction is completed and riprap is being installed. After completion of the riprap and backfill, construction of the superstructure will begin.

Concrete abutment walls support the bridge superstructure (deck). Riprap is placed to help
prevent further erosion.

Bridge Structure 6.1

Caissons and abutment footings are complete and construction of the abutment walls and wing walls is underway. After completion of the abutment walls, riprap installation will begin.

Holes were drilled down to bedrock and concrete caissons poured. Caissons and abutment walls will
support the bridge. Wing walls and riprap will help prevent further erosion.

Bridge Structure 8.0

Caissons are being drilled and abutment footings are under construction. After completion of the footings, the abutment wall and wing wall construction will begin.

Holes are drilled down to bedrock and concrete caissons poured to provide a stable foundation
for the new bridge.

CR 27 "Narrows"

Rock excavation , embankment and riprap are all underway in the "Narrows". To date approximately 25,000 cubic yards of rock has been excavated and 7,500 cubic yards of riprap placed. Work continues 7 days a week.

Blasting operations generate angular rock material to be used as riprap.

Riprap material is placed to help prevent further erosion of the slopes.

PROJECT STATUS

Repairs to this road began in June, 2014. Reconstruction of the road to an all-weather surface is scheduled for December of 2014. The road will be surfaced with gravel over the winter and the contractor will return in the springs to place the asphalt surface. Access will be maintained during construction, and through the winter, to all areas that currently have access.

This project was awarded to the American Civil Constructors, Inc. for $15,455,279.00. FEMA will provide 75% of the funding for the project while the state Office of Emergency Management and the county will each provide 12.5%.
