Larimer County, Colo. – July 28, 2014 - The Long Term Recovery Group – Larimer County Flood (LTRG-LCF) is the organization that provides free case management services, volunteer labor and other relief to Larimer County residents affected by the 2013 floods. The LTRG has requested the help of World Renew to assess unmet needs. World Renew is an international disaster relief agency specializing in conducting and compiling unmet needs assessments. This data allows the LTRG, and other recovery organizations and funding partners, better meet the needs of flood survivors.
“One of the most important aspects of the recovery process is to have a clear understanding of the needs of the residents,” said Laura Levy, Manager of the Larimer County LTRG. “Now is the best time to assess what needs aren’t being met. The initial emergency of the disaster is behind us, most homeowners know the financial assistance they will be receiving from insurance or government, and although we have many grants and loans available,” said Levy, “we need to know what needs may be falling through the cracks. The best way to find out who needs help is to have them come and tell the World Renew team exactly what they need.”
The World Renew teams will launch their efforts at the upcoming “Roadmap to Recovery” Flood Recovery Expo at the new Events Complex in Estes Park on August 16th. Teams will be at the event to make appointments with flood affected residents. Beginning Monday, August 18th World Renew will hold office hours in flood-damaged communities.
“We want to make this process convenient and easy for our residents so we’re coming to them. Look for the really nice people in the green shirts,” said Levy. Eight teams will be stationed within the communities of Drake, Glen Haven, Big Elk Meadows, Rist Canyon, Loveland and Estes Park for the next two weeks. Residents are asked to provide specifics about property damage and financial need. This information is critical to better understand what resources are still needed to help residents rebuild. Larimer County and the State of Colorado also use this information to determine how future CDBG-DR funds will be allocated.
“The county has to prove to the need,” said Levy. “The only way to do that is to get the most detailed data we can from our residents. There are no guarantees, but it’s one of the ways we can connect the dots and help those who need it most. World Renew is mentioned by name in the CDBG-DR Action Plans as a credible source of data to prove that need. This is a very important reason for our residents to participate in the survey.” Weld and Boulder County have also completed World Renew assessments.
